£2bn boost for council housing

The promise, by Theresa May in a conference  speech that didn’t go entirely to plan, is to make the planning process quicker and easier for councils, and help them to find the money to build affordable housing. Promising to make mending a “broken housing market” her “personal mission”, she announced an increase in the building budget for councils and housing association to £9bn. What she didn’t announce, however, was a means by which local councils can temporarily opt out of the Right to Buy scheme, which might have helped ensure an actual net increase in available affordable property. Nor was she specific regarding the time frame during which the extra £2bn would be available.
